A Look Ahead at the Final Season of True Blood

We laughed. We cried. We did bad things.

Earlier today, HBO announced the upcoming season of True Blood will be, as many expected, its final one. “True Blood has been nothing short of a defining show for HBO,” programming chief Michael Lombardo said in an official statement released by HBO. “Alan Ball took the books by Charlaine Harris, assembled a brilliant cast led by the magnificent Anna Paquin in the role of Sookie Stackhouse and crafted a show that has taken its many devoted fans on an unforgettable journey.”

Alan Ball, creator and former showrunner, also released his own statement saying, “From the moment I read Charlaine’s books, I thought there was the potential for something really special. Then our amazing writers, cast and crew brought her world to life in a way that exceeded my wildest expectations.”

Season 6 showrunner Brian Buckner will once again take the helm for the show’s final season, beginning next summer.

But while we wait, we at the Source have a few things we’re wondering about when it comes to the upcoming season, and how this all will end.

Will Sookie Stop Being Annoying?

sookie-stackhouse

Without anything against the very lovely and talented Anna Paquin, we’re going to say this for the record: Sookie is annoying. Sookie haters all over the world? We hear you. While Sookie’s down-home charm and appeal seemed plausible and even entertaining in the beginning of the series, it kept wading further and further into ridiculous territory to the point of being offensive. Sure, we get that fairy blood is like catnip to vampires. But that doesn’t explain the lovelorn Sam, or the inexplicably indestructible attraction (can we call it love?) of Alcide. Essentially, if you’re not gay or related to Sookie by blood, you’re probably going to try very hard to make us all (and her) believe she’s the best woman you’ve ever seen in your life. It’s extreme. But even worse than that are the quirky little one-liners from the woman herself about how exasperated she is that everyone wants her. It’s our hope that in this, the television Swan Song of Sookie Stackhouse, we get a little more gravity and a little less whining about how many hot men keep knocking on her door. We’re just saying.

Is Eric Still Alive?

TrueBloodFinale4

If all True Blood fans can agree on one thing, it’s the importance of Eric Northman on this show. Sufficed to say you could hear the collective gasp when, moments after giving us a nude ice beach moment, we watched the man burn alive. But it may be too soon to say goodbye to everyone’s favorite viking vampire. Showrunner Brian Bucker went on the record, following the mass hysteria among the fandom. “I can tell you that Alexander Skarsgard is going to be a part of the next season of True Blood,” he promised. “He will be a series regular.” But what does that mean? As we all know, Eric’s maker Godric made more than one appearance from beyond the grave.

Has Jason Found Real Love?

JasonandViolet

Of all the characters on this show, Jason’s character arc has been one of the most dynamic. And the one thing running through each of his stories is his inability to find real love. Like his sister, he has magnetic appeal. It’s easily said one of the defining characteristics of Jason Stackhouse can be summed up with the word womanizer. However, over the years, he’s matured and made heartbreakingly sincere attempts to find and foster real love (with Crystal and more recently Jessica). But nothing has been quite like his relationship with the vampire named Violet. Can this love-slave scenario actually transform into the genuine and lasting love Jason has seemed to want so badly in recent years? We’ll find out.

Who Else Will Die?

We all know it’s go big or go home time for the writing team of True Blood. And with the casualty count high this season, from Terry to Nora to Warlow to Andy’s random fairy daughters, we only can wonder who will meet the “true death” next year. When all is said and done, who will be left standing?

Zombie Vampires?

TrueBloodZombieVampires

These “Hep-V” infected walking corpses are a little bit of a question mark at the moment. But one thing we know: they’re hungry, and they move in hoards. Watch your back, AMC. HBO might just blow the whole zombie genre out of the water before they draw the curtain on this show.
